3/28-3/30/24 Brunswick-Savannah
3/28 Woke up to more rain but it looked like it would end fairly early so we headed out further north. It was chilly and rainy most of the morning. Around mid morning things started to clear and the afternoon ended up fairly nice. We even got to roll out the Jib for about an hour. There were 3 of us that all left Brunswick together this morning and we all spent most of the day cruising together. We peeled off into the North Newport River to anchor for the night. Got the anchor set and grilled burgers for dinner. Then being March, there was basketball to watch. Gorgeous sunset but all kinds of bugs since there wasn’t much breeze.
3/29 Well we had grand plans for a fun Easter weekend in Savannah ahead of work on the sail drives scheduled for the middle of next week. We though we’d like to stay downtown with easy access to good food and all the happenings. Shane looked around a decided to book a spot at the dock at the Westin on the other side of the Savannah River from downtown Savannah thinking it would be quieter and there was a water taxi that could take us across when we wanted to go. We got in, had to call the hotel on the phone because they don’t monitor the radio to get a dock hand to catch lines. We encountered the aforementioned “water taxi” that looked more like a city bus on water (not quite what we remember from years ago) as they asked our intentions as they came in to dock. We tied up as far down the dock as we could from said “water taxi”, and were then informed that at the end of the night he parked there so we had to move up. We ate a quick dinner at the hotel restaurant while keeping a side eye on the boat from the window. There was basketball to watch and as it got dark the situation got sketchier and sketchier. The “water taxi” makes a triangular route every 30 minutes. So every 30 minutes he would fly in about 8 feet off our aft corner at what felt like 10-12 knots. Like we could have shaken hands. Every time he went by the wake bashed the boat against the dock. The rout goes from 6:30am to 10:00pm. Then the container ships started… needless to say no one slept well that night.
3/30 We shook ourselves off in the morning and started trying to find a place to move to, we were not going to be able to take 4 days of this. Luckily Isle of Hope had a spot we could get. We have never been so happy to back track a few hours down the ICW. We pulled into Isle of Hope had some great dock hands to help. The marina was so quiet and peaceful, great view. The facility was ok, had a cute little shop and they had curtesy vehicles. We used the curtesy car to go pick up a rental since we would be in Savannah for about 5 days. The area right around the marina was gorgeous, old Spanish moss covered oaks, unique old houses, white picket fences very idyllic. We enjoyed dinner at a cute little spot close to the marina, after hitting the west marine and a few other spots. We hit a grocery store to get some fresh provisions and then tucked in for much calmer night!
